Covid-19 USA Reopenings and Lockdowns

As Covid-19 prevails, the United States of America (USA) look to reopen many of their businesses in many states. President Trump has given the governors authority to handle the process of reopening their state according to what suits them best. Each state will decide on the procedures they will implement with the help from the federal government.

However, the government has outlined a guideline to help states reopen. The guidelines can be viewed here: “Opening Up America Again

To summarize:

Phase One– Majority of lockdown policies remain.
– Avoid non-essential travel.
– Avoid gathering in groups, however large venues such as places of worship, restaurants, and sports venues can operate with social distancing rules.
Phase Two– Non-essential travel to be allowed if no evidence of rising cases.
– Schools and bars can reopen with strict room occupancy rules.
Phase Three– States that are low in risk and are seeing cases decreasing drastically can allow interactions with public, but with physical distancing still in place.
– Hospitals and home caring facilities can resume visits.
– Bars can increase their room occupancy capacity.

Our USA map is labelled in the following way:

  • #4 are states that have high restrictions on business and travel.
  • #3 are states with some restrictions in place.
  • #2 are states with lifted restrictions or major restrictions that have not been acted on.
  • #1 are states that have announced to lift restrictions.

Ideally you want to see USA move into #2 and then #1 as time progresses and the Covid-19 situation eases. If we compare the states decisions from May 4, 2020 to May 24, 2020, we can see the following changes:

10% of USA remains with high restrictions on business and travel. However, we have seen 8% of USA move from #3 to #2, which is to ease many of their restrictions. Currently, we have no states that have announced to lift their restrictions. If we aggregate the numbers, we can see that 39% of USA falls into #4 and #3 category, which means implementing either medium to high level restrictions in their state. As for the #2 category, 61% of USA have eased their restrictions.
